Harpenden and Wheathampstead District Scouts

Explorers are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Structure and meetings

A group of Explorers is called a Unit.

Not all Units meet every week, partly due to activities, holidays, exams and the other commitments that crop up in a teenager's life, and also because Explorers tend to get out and about at weekends more often than other sections.

Explorers often get the chance to work with other Explorers in their District, not just their own Unit, so can take part in an even wider spectrum of activities.

There is also a range of ambitious badges and awards, through which Explorers can demonstrate their proficiencies and expand their interests.

Find out more about us...

Here you can find a PowerPoint presention about the Explorer Units in our District and also a Word form. This will assist getting a smooth transfer from your current Scout Troop to one of the District Explorer units.

World Challenge 2018 Wine tasting and Ghana
22/01/2018 By Emmanuelle Bentley-Sanders

Dear Scouting friends 😊

As some of you will already know, during the summer of 2018 Dylan and other students from Roundwood Park will be taking part in World Challenge expedition in Zambia & Botswana. They will be out there for 28 days during which time they will have the opportunity to experience a fair amount of both countries and learn about the culture primarily by taking part in 2 community projects. Having signed up for this in November 2016, this is becoming more and more real with teams sorted, itinerary decided, flights booked and we even started with vaccination last week!

Dylan has worked hard the last 14 months to fundraise for his trip and we would like to thank everyone who has supported him along the way either by attending fundraising events or offering babysitting and other odd job opportunities. He is also lucky to have had regular work coaching tennis.

Whilst he’s doing well, he isn’t quite there yet so to help boost his fundraising efforts, together with 2 other families, we are organising a WINE TASTING Evening to be held on 24th February at Roundwood Park School.

Doors will open at 7.30pm, ready to start at 8.00pm.

Tickets are £15.00 per person and include a cheese platter, bread & crackers, pickles & chutney half way through the evening; up to 8 people per table.

See attached poster for more details.

Dylan is now also going to Ghana in July/August 2019 as part of an Expedition organised by Harpenden and Inverness Scouts. The Expedition will be based in Hohoe in the Volta region midway between the Togo border and Lake Volta. The purpose of the Expedition is to build a playground at the Volta School for the deaf in Hohoe, working with Ghanaian Scouts. The school currently has 300 deaf and 3 deaf & blind students.

The Expedition comprises of 14 local scouts and explorer accompanied by a small number of Leaders and they are raising funds to help with the cost of their trip. Please come along for a fun Quiz and a delicious Ghanaian meal on 24th March at 10th Harpenden Scouts Hut.

Tickets are £15 per person; Tables of up to 8 people.

If you would like to book tickets for either or both events, please contact me on or please respond to this email.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and we hope you will be able to support Dylan & friends with their fundraising efforts.

Kind regards,

Emmanuelle – for Dylan 😊
