To all GSLs, ESLs, ADCs, and District Exec  - Please forward to your teams.

1.  Preparation for the 2018 Census -  I have two requests for all of our section leaders:
- The District has continued to grow over recent years, but that doesn't happen without continuing to focus on this.  If your section is not "full", we still have a District Waiting List, so please contact Jane Murray (harpendenwaitinglist@gmail.com) with details of what ages you are looking for and she will contact parents on the list and find you some keen new Beavers, Cubs or Scouts.
- Next year, the Scout Association will be seeking more information about our young people in order to ensure we are Scouting for All.  They will be looking for accurate information on gender, ethnicity and disability, and now is a good time to be starting the collection of that information, rather than leaving to the last minute.  For those of you on OSM, there is a really easy tool in OSM to allow for collection of this information.  Under "Members", click on "Census Aggregator" and you will see every member where there is information missing in relation gender, ethnicity and disability.  You can then click on "Send My.Scout email" for each of them, and an email is sent to the parents asking them to complete the details (NB.  this is a free feature and you don't have to be using My.Scout for this to work).  You can then see at the bottom of the page an aggregate of this data for your section will make life easy when it comes to Census time in January.

2. Mark Denton & ADC(Cubs)

Many of you may have heard by now that Mark Denton has decided to step down from his role as ADC (Cubs).  He will be staying actively involved in Scouting, but now in a role as an Assistant Scout Leader.  Mark has provided fabulous support over the last few years, by providing support to individual leaders or packs when needed, but also by leading the running of a number of really successful and fun District events.  A huge THANK YOU to Mark.

New ADC (Cubs)
Mark’s announcement obviously leaves a huge pair of shoes to fill.  There is some flexibility as to what the role entails though, so we don’t need someone to fit into Mark’s shoes as they can bring your own style of shoes to the role!  The underlying purpose is to provide support to our cub leaders across the District to enable the best opportunities to be offered to our cubs, but how that is done can vary.  Please let me know if you are interested in taking on this challenge.

3.  Remembrance Day Parade - Remembrance Day Parade takes place this year on 12th November.  Please find attached the invitation and order of service for the Harpenden parade - information for Kimpton and Wheathampstead will hold their own events.   Packs and Troops are asked to limit their numbers to 4-6 per pack/troop so that we don't overwhelm the event.

4.  Orienteering Challenge - We had 24 Scouts take part in an Orienteering event in Rothamsted Park on 7th October.  Congratulations to Connor Haward and Elise Wilson who both appeared in the top 10 for the Open Orange course.  There is another event running on 4th November at Stanborough Lakes - see attached flyer.  For those Scouts intending to take part in Green Beret this year, this would be great practice for the orienteering part of Green Beret.  They can either take part individually or in pairs. Scout Leaders - if teams of your Scouts are going to attend, please let me know names and dates of birth so that I can pre-register.  There will be a prize for the winning registered Scout.  It is just £2 to enter on the day (and £1 to hire the timing chip)

5.  WSJ Selection day - Over the weekend of 4th/5th November, the District will be running a selection camp for those of our Scouts/Explorers who have applied to go to the next World Scout Jamboree.  If you would like to help out as a leader over the weekend, I am sure Richard Bird would be very keen to hear from you (4thbird@googlemail.com)

6.  National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra and Band - I have attached an advert below for the National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra and Band.  Please can you ensure that it is circulated to Scouts, Explorers and Network as it’s open to everyone aged between 12 and 25.

7.  Hertfordshire Scouts Paddlesports - The Paddlesports team have set up a number of open paddling events during 2018 for Scouts, Explorers and leaders to brush up their skills in Kayak or Canoe at the ESSA water activities centre - please take a look at the following link if interested:  http://mailchi.mp/b51ef9e6b715/paddlesports-sessions-2018-please-forward-to-anyone-who-may-be-interested?e=47e1ab8892

8.  Recent District Achievements -

Peak Assault - We had over 100 people from the District at the recent 50th anniversary Peak Assault in North Wales, either participating or helping support the event.  Congratulations to everyone who took part - the conditions were a little tough but there were a lot of smiles and fun had by all.  Special mention to Shackleton ESU whose teams won booth the Explorer event and the Explorer Training event.  And a huge thanks to all the adult support who made the whole event possible.

District Cubs Football - Nearly 100 Cubs took part in the District Cubs football competition, with representatives, I think, from each Group.  1st Wheathampstead won 1-0 in extra time a closely matched final with 4th Harpenden.  Congratulations to them, and well done to all for taking part. A huge thank you to Pete Desborough for organising another great event.

9. Upcoming Training -

Within the District -
  • First Aid - We are planning on running a Refresher on the evening of Tuesday 21st November and a full First Response on Saturday 17th February 2018.  Venue and timings are still to be finalised but if you need First Aid training, please reserve a spot as soon as possible with Jane Murray (janebmurray@gmail.com)

  • The County is running a cycle of training sessions at Phasels where multiple modules can be completed on Saturdays and Sundays next year to ensure everyone has an opportunity to complete  - please take a look at the attached for what is running when.  All sessions can be booked on the County website
