Harpenden and Wheathampstead District Scouts

Welcome to The Adventure

Who are we?

The Scout Association is the UK's biggest mixed youth organisation with over 520,000 members.

We change lives by offering young people fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities.

In our District we get to do all sorts of fun things at our weekly meetings, camps, Gang Show and international expeditions. Lots of games, singing and helping others. Find out more by clicking on About Us or on the menu bar above

Where do I start to find out more information about joining a Scout Group?
You can find a page HERE where both parents and young people can get information about our Scout Groups and things they get up to.

District Newsletter
June 2017

10/06/2017 By DC-Russell Brooks
To all GSLs, ESLs, ADCs, and District Exec  - Please forward to your teams.
1.  District Module 38 Training - 30th June-2nd July - Calling any leaders interested in camping and considering applying for a Nights Away Permit at some stage in the future.  We will be running a training session with the District, so that there is no need to travel, and people within the District can learn from each other. The current plan is for leaders to erect their tents, if the wish, on Friday evening after 9pm so we can start promptly at 9am on Saturday 1st July.  Leaders will then camp overnight and continue the course on the Sunday with the idea of finishing by 1pm.  There are still spaces available, so please contact Liz Jack or Elaine Brind to book a place and for more information.

2. Manchester Bee Badge Appeal - A couple of people have asked me about the Manchester Bee Badge, which has been launched by the Greater Manchester Scout Counties to help raise money in support of the families and victims of the Manchester bomb on 22nd May 2017.  If you want to support this initiative, I can confirm my support for the badge being worn as an occasional badge.

2.  District AGM - Everyone is welcome!!
Venue:  1st Wheathampstead Group Scout HQ, Wheatsac, Meads Lane, Off East Lane, Wheathampstead, Herts, AL4 8BZ at 8.15pm for refreshments, and a meeting start at 8.45pm.  Note that parking is limited at the HQ but there is a public car park off East Lane.  If anyone has special parking requirements please contact Keith Brooker

3. Armed Forces Day - 24th June - On June 24th between 12.30 and 5pm, on the Common near the Public Hall, Harpenden and Wheathampstead District Scouts are supporting the Town Council in their promotion of the Armed Forces Day. We will have an impressive promotions trailer that features graphics, video screen, hospitality unit and flags to attract and impress the public. There will be many hundreds, perhaps thousands walking by our promotional trailer and, because we are very welcoming and interesting, we expect conversations with adults who are likely to join us. We are looking for leaders and other adults to help us try and find more like you!

Alongside the trailer we will run a display game called Rescuing the Meerkats which is also likely to attract the interest of the public. It involves teams of 5 cubs/scouts working together to lift 3 rafts of meerkats out of a swamp and they race the clock to win best time. Winners get prizes. Please encourage your cubs and scouts to put on their best uniform (in teams of 5) and enjoy the challenge. See attached flyers.

4.  Have your Explorers had their say? - An email containing a link to the national survey for Explorers to complete to share their views on their Scouting experience was sent to Explorer Leaders in May. Your support in reminding and encouraging Explorers to complete it would be fantastic.  Survey closes on 16th June.

5. District Beaver Scout Leader meeting - 14th June - The next meeting will be held at 4th Harpenden Scout hut from 8pm.

6.  Cubs 7-a-side Football competition - SAVE THE DATE - 7 a side football competition will be held on the 14th October at Roundwood Park Sports Hall from 2 to 6pm.  More information will follow nearer the time.

7. Upcoming First Aid training within the District -
  • First Aid Refresher on 5th September from 7.30-10pm (Venue TBA)
  • Please contact Jane Murray to register
8.  Mayor’s Charity Quiz Night Attached is a poster for the Mayor’s upcoming Quiz Night on Friday 14th July, which this year will be raising money for Harpenden Connect (the Harpenden Hopper Bus Service) and Rennie Grove Hospice Care.

9.  St Nicholas’ Great Get Together Tea Party St Nicholas Church will be running a ‘Great Get Together’ tea party on Sunday 18 June in the Church Hall (those who attended last year will recall that the Church held a similar event for the Queen’s 90th Birthday). HMRC have published new model wording for Gift Aid Declarations to be used from 5th April 2016.  The new declaration has been shortened and simplified removing references to Council Tax and VAT.  Scout groups are able to claim Gift Aid on membership subscriptions and donations for sponsored events and should use the new Gift Aid declaration form for any donations from 5th April 2016 onwards.  Declarations that are already in place do not need to be updated.
